Statement Sums involving Ratios: In the statement we are given a ratio and then a value of one thing we are supposed to find the value of the other thing. Sometimes we are given the values of the certain quantities we are supposed to find the ratio.
ILLUSTRATION 1: In a bag of red and green balloons, the ratio of red balloon to green balloon is 3:4. If the bag contains 120 green balloons, how many red balloons are there?
Solution: In the statement we are given a ratio and then a value of green balloons we are supposed to find the value of red balloons.
Step 1: Assign variables :
Let x = red sweets
Write the items in the ratio as a fraction

Step 2: Solve the equation by Cross Multiply
3 × 120 = 4 × x
360 = 4x
Answer: There are 90 red balloons
ILLUSTRATION 2: There are 45 students in a class. If the number of boys is 25 and the remaining are girls. Find the ratio of number of boys to girls
Solution: In this statement we are given the no of students in a class and the number of boys. We will first find the number of girls. Then we will find the ratio.
Total students = 45
No of boys = 25
No of girls = Total students - No. of boys= 45-25 = 20
So the ratio of No. of boys: No of girls = 5:4
